Terms of Service

Last updated: January 15, 2026

Welcome to WhatBuilt. These Terms of Service (the “Terms”) govern your access to and use of the WhatBuilt website and related services (collectively, the “Service”). By using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

1. What WhatBuilt does

WhatBuilt lets you enter a public website URL and returns an educated guess of the technologies that website appears to use, such as its CDN, CMS, frameworks, analytics, and hosting provider. Results are inferred from publicly available signals and are provided for informational purposes only.

2. Eligibility and acceptable use

You may use the Service only if you can form a binding contract with us and only in compliance with these Terms and all applicable laws. When using the Service, you agree not to:

  • Check URLs you are not authorized to access, or use the Service to attempt to bypass authentication, paywalls, or access controls.
  • Probe, scan, or test the Service or any website in a way that is abusive, disruptive, or could harm the Service or a third party.
  • Use automated means to submit requests at a volume that exceeds reasonable human use, or that interferes with the Service.
  • Resell, rebrand, or redistribute the Service or its results as your own product.
  • Use the Service to violate any law, infringe any right, or target any person or organization with harm.

We may throttle, suspend, or terminate access to the Service at any time, with or without notice, if we believe it is being misused.

3. Accuracy of results

Findings returned by WhatBuilt are best-effort guesses based on public signals and pattern matching. They may be incomplete, out of date, or wrong. Confidence ratings are guidelines, not guarantees. Do not rely on WhatBuilt results for security, compliance, legal, competitive, financial, or other high-stakes decisions without independent verification.

4. Third-party websites

The Service analyzes third-party websites that we do not own or control. Any trademarks, logos, and product names referenced in results belong to their respective owners and are used only to identify the technology being detected. We make no claim of affiliation with, endorsement by, or sponsorship from any detected vendor.

5. Intellectual property

WhatBuilt and its original content, features, and functionality are owned by us and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws. These Terms do not grant you any right to use the WhatBuilt name, logo, or branding without our prior written permission.

6. Feedback

If you send us ideas, suggestions, or feedback about the Service, you grant us a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free license to use that feedback to improve the Service, without any obligation to you.

7. Disclaimers

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available” without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, accuracy, or uninterrupted availability. Your use of the Service is at your own risk.

8. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, in no event will WhatBuilt, its operators, or contributors be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, revenues, data, or goodwill, arising out of or related to your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service will not exceed one hundred U.S. dollars (US$100).

9. Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless WhatBuilt and its operators from any claims, damages, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your use of the Service or your violation of these Terms.

10. Changes to the Service or Terms

We may modify or discontinue the Service at any time. We may also update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Your continued use of the Service after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

11. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws applicable at our principal place of business, without regard to conflict of law rules. You agree that any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service will be resolved exclusively in the competent courts of that jurisdiction, unless otherwise required by mandatory local law.
